The Director of Tax is a senior finance leader responsible for building and leading a best-in-class global tax function to support Papaya Global’s strategic, operational, and compliance objectives. Reporting directly to the CFO, this role will oversee all aspects of global tax, including corporate tax, indirect tax, transfer pricing, and tax compliance across multiple jurisdictions.
This position will partner closely with Finance, Legal, Product, and external advisors to ensure tax-efficient operations, mitigate risks, and support scalable global growth. The Director of Tax will play a critical role in shaping Papaya’s tax strategy as the company continues to expand internationally and evolve its business model.
Key Responsibilities
The Director of Tax is a senior finance leader responsible for building and leading a best-in-class global tax function to support Papaya Global’s strategic, operational, and compliance objectives. Reporting directly to the CFO, this role will oversee all aspects of global tax, including corporate tax, indirect tax, transfer pricing, and tax compliance across multiple jurisdictions.
This position will partner closely with Finance, Legal, Product, and external advisors to ensure tax-efficient operations, mitigate risks, and support scalable global growth. The Director of Tax will play a critical role in shaping Papaya’s tax strategy as the company continues to expand internationally and evolve its business model.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and lead the company’s global tax strategy, ensuring alignment with business objectives and regulatory requirements.
- Oversee all direct and indirect tax compliance across jurisdictions, including corporate income tax, VAT/GST, withholding taxes, and payroll-related taxes.
- Manage the preparation and review of tax provisions (ASC 740) and support financial reporting requirements.
- Develop and implement transfer pricing policies and ensure proper documentation and compliance globally.
- Partner with Finance and Legal on structuring international operations, intercompany transactions, and new market entries.
- Monitor global tax legislation and proactively assess impacts on the business.
- Lead relationships with external tax advisors, auditors, and tax authorities.
- Drive tax risk management, including audits, controversies, and dispute resolution.
- Identify and implement tax planning opportunities to optimize the company’s effective tax rate and cash tax position.
- Support M&A activities, including tax due diligence, structuring, and post-acquisition integration.
- Collaborate with Product and Operations teams on tax implications of new offerings, including global payroll and payments solutions.
- Drive automation, process improvements, and scalability in tax reporting and compliance processes.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA, LLM in Taxation, or equivalent certification preferred.
- 7+ years of progressive experience in corporate tax, with a mix of public accounting and in-house experience.
- Strong experience in global, high-growth, SaaS or technology-driven companies.
- Deep expertise in international tax, transfer pricing, and indirect tax regimes.
- Experience working in a multi-entity, multi-jurisdictional environment.
- Proven track record of managing tax audits and working with tax authorities globally.
- Strong technical expertise in global tax regulations and frameworks.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to balance compliance and business objectives.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
