This role has been designed as ‘Hybrid’ with an expectation that you will work on average 2-3 days per week from an HPE office.

Job Description:

The Technical Consultant provides HPE and partner technology solutions to external customers and internal project teams. They are responsible for providing technical support and leadership in the design, delivery and handover of technology solutions designed to meet the customers’ business needs. As a trusted advisor, they work to understand the customer's business requirements by creating and maintaining effective customer relationships to ensure customer satisfaction and successful project delivery outcomes. We are looking for someone with a Red Hat Linux engineering background.

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for discovery, designing and implementing customer project outcomes based on deliverables defined within a statement of work.
  • Responsible for providing a detailed technical design for enterprise solutions using industry products and technologies. Responsible for verifying and implementing the detailed technical design solution to the problem as identified by the Project/Technical Manager.
  • Analyses and develops enterprise technology solutions to meet customer needs.
  • Regularly leads in the technical assessment and delivery of Red Hat technical solutions to the customer, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, and Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform.
  • Leads and/or assists with the technical assessment and delivery of Linux technical solutions to the customer, including Linux-based deployments, Kubernetes solutions, and automation/configuration management solutions.
  • Implementation of designs for technology solutions involving the Red Hat portfolio of solutions, as well as general Linux and open source software solutions.
  • Provides advanced technical consulting and advice to others on proposal solution design, effort, system management, tuning and modification of solutions.
  • Adheres to and provides ongoing input to the company strategy as it relates to the consulting group.
  • Collects and manipulates data from appropriate sources to assist in determining specific customer needs and requirements.
  • Responds to requests for technical information and advice from customers.
  • Engages in technical problem solving across multiple technologies; often needs to develop new methods and processes to apply to the situation.
  • Owns and manages knowledge sharing within a job family community (e.g. team, practice, or project). Ensures team members support knowledge sharing and re-use requirements of project.
  • Proactively encourages membership and contributions of others to professional community and coaches others in area of expertise. Supports sales activities by providing technical solution qualification and review.
  • Actively grows the company portfolio with existing customers through new opportunities and change management.

About You:

Required:

  • At least three years Linux engineering experience (preferably Red Hat Enterprise Linux)
  • Should be confident with kernel parameters and boot process, working with systemd/processes/services, cron/atd, package management, SELinux, networking, reverse proxy/web serving/load balancing, LVM and raw storage, basic Git, SSL operations, and user/group management
  • At least 12 months experience with Docker and/or Podman
  • At least 12 months Kubernetes implementation experience (preferably Red Hat OpenShift)
  • Understanding of the following concepts, preferably in a vendor distribution such as Red Hat OpenShift:
    • kubectl, apply vs create (declarative vs imperative)
    • Kubernetes storage (PV-PVC model, StorageClasses)
    • Kubernetes networking (CNI and pod networking)
    • Kubernetes security (X.509, OAuth)
    • Kubernetes observability/logging/monitoring (Prometheus/Grafana or other similar tools, some or all of ELK, ELF, fluentbit, fluentd, vectord, etc.)
    • Basic Kubernetes troubleshooting (kubectl commands for checking node/deployment/pod health, how to view and edit resources, CRDs, etc.)

Preferred:

  • Five years Linux engineering experience
  • As above but in addition, understanding of some or all of the following:
    • Automation technologies such as shell scripting, Ansible, Terraform, Puppet, Chef etc.
    • Basic programming, e.g. Python
    • Detailed troubleshooting
    • Performance tuning and management
    • Ability to integrate with technologies such as Microsoft Windows services, API-driven integrations, and other third party mechanisms
    • Distributed private key and secrets management
  • Experience with Red Hat OpenShift 4.x
  • Experience with SUSE Rancher 2.x
  • Experience utilising Git for source control
  • Understanding of the following products/concepts:
    • Public and private container registries
    • Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management
    • Ceph/Red Hat OpenShift Data Foundation
    • Kubernetes backup architecture
    • CI/CD (Jenkins, Tekton, or in a vendored distribution e.g. OpenShift Pipelines) and GitOps (ArgoCD, or in a vendored distribution e.g. OpenShift GitOps)
    • Service Mesh (Istio/Jaeger/Kiali, or in a vendored distribution e.g. OpenShift Service Mesh)
    • Source-to-image build technologies

Ideal Certifications

  • Red Hat Certified Specialist in Containers (RHCS)
  • Red Hat Certified Specialist in OpenShift Administration (RHCS)
  • Red Hat Certified Systems Adminstrator (RHCSA)
  • Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE)
  • Red Hat Certified Architect (RHCA)
  • SUSE Certified Deployment Specialist (SCDS)
    • There are multiple of these, either Rancher Kubernetes Engine 2, Rancher Prime 2.7, or SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 would be looked upon favourably
  • Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator (LFCS)
    • Older version of this certificate called LFCE (Linux Foundation Certified Engineer) also looked upon favourably
  • Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA)
  • Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD)
  • Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist (CKS)
