Job Description:
The Large-Scale Integrated Photonics (LSIP) Lab at HPE Labs has an immediate opening for a qualified research scientist with expertise in architecture and system design emerging analog computing platforms such as ReRAM-based in-memory computing, (silicon) photonics or quantum/quantum-inspired computing. This role will work closely with LSIP Lab colleagues in Milpitas, California, as well as with partners in Santa Barbara, Germany and Canada. As the central (international) research organization for Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), HPE Labs' purpose is to deliver breakthrough technologies and technology advancements that provide a competitive advantage for the company, by investing in fundamental science and technology in areas of interest to HPE and getting the resulting technologies ready for adoption into new and existing markets.
This role will be responsible for chip design, development of (micro-)architectures and overall system design, algorithm/hardware co-design and the corresponding hardware optimization in emerging analog computing platforms based on memristive in-memory computing or similar. While most of our neuromorphic and quantum-inspired hardware research is focused on classical solutions, we would also like to explore the computational and energy-efficiency benefits of working at the quantum limit for, e.g., our photonics platforms. Furthermore, the role will work from a top-down perspective and identify key workloads for such hardware, identify computationally burdensome subroutines, map this to appropriate hardware accelerators and perform cross-platform benchmarking on prototype hardware, or emulators of such hardware.
This role will collaborate heavily with an international multi-disciplinary team of machine learning experts, software developers, photonic/(analog/mixed-signal) electronic device and circuit designers, and computer scientists.
In our team, all the software related to design, measurement and data analysis is written in Python, hence, a strong background with Python is critical.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
Master degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Photonics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or equivalent.
The ideal candidate has performed groundbreaking research related to the architectures in emerging neuromorphic computing, quantum computing or equivalent emerging hardware platforms and corresponding algorithm/hardware co-design.
Stellar publication record in top peer-reviewed journals in your field is a plus.
Team player, self-motivated and independent worker.
Strong writing and verbal communication skills
Preferred Skills
Expert in recent machine learning techniques, architecture and micro-architecture design.
Proficiency in circuit design tools such as Cadence Virtuoso, Spectre with experience in schematic capture, layout tools and post-layout simulations to design and simulate analog and mixed-signal circuits and systems
Familiarity and exposure to emerging NVMs (ReRAMs, FeFETs etc.) and memory devices with solid understanding of CMOS circuit modeling, trade-offs
Experience with lab testing, experimental measurements and post-silicon validation
Experience with chip tape-outs is a plus
Expert in Python coding; specifically pytorch and tensorflow expertise is relevant.
Experience with programming GPUs and FPGAs is relevant.
Experience with cycle-accurate hardware simulators such as SST is a plus.
